Wildlife refuge causes evacuations


A fire in a wildlife refuge has caused the evacuation of about 150 homes. 

The fire began Saturday afternoon in the Havasu National Wildlife Refuge south of Mohave Valley.
No injuries have been reported.
The Red Cross opened a shelter at Mohave Valley Elementary School, 1419 Willow Drive.
As of 4 p.m., a mandatory evacuation order was in place for all residences south of Laguna Road and east of Vanderslice Road.

Mohave County Fire Department officials said affected areas of evacuated homes are the Courtwright Road Area and south. Evacuations are continuing north to the Laguna Road area as a precaution. 
State Route 95 remains open and crews are working hard to
reopen route south to Interstate 40. Sacramento Wash only open to accommodate fire equipment. 
Houses being evacuated are along Courtwright Road. Some of the Subdivisions named are Delta City and Topock Lake Rancheros Subdivisions
The cause of the fire has not been determined, according to Byron Steward, emergency management coordinator for Mohave County Development Services.
