The selection controversy that clouded SA’s exit from the Cricket World Cup damaged the relationship between Cricket SA and the South African Cricketers’ Association.
Now, while the rift has since been repaired, the player body is anxious that the situation should not arise again — which could complicate Cricket SA’s implementation of "aggressive transformation".
Willie Basson, a member of an Eminent Persons Group, and who sits on Cricket SA’s transformation committee, told the portfolio committee for sport and recreation in Parliament that Cricket SA had made "mistakes" when it "sent a note to the team management on the eve of the semifinal, reminding them about Cricket SA’s policy on demographic representation". The minutes of the meeting further record that Mr Basson had
said a consequence of the sending of thenote was that "the administrators of Cricket SA had allowed a wide distance to develop between themselves and the players’ association". "The most important thing in putting all that behind the players is that this type of thing should not be repeated."
